Midwifery services in PEI
Midwives provide client-centered primary care from preconception through to eight weeks postpartum for clients and their newborns. They specialize in providing care to low-risk, healthy individuals but can also recognize and make appropriate referrals when necessary. This includes:
- Preconception counseling tailored to a family's needs (discussing fertility issues or planning for an upcoming pregnancy, providing information on midwifery)
- Pap/HPV screening
- Ordering screening and diagnostic tests (for example, ultrasounds and bloodwork)
- Prescribing medications applicable to the client’s care
- Assessments and education on various related topics
- Prenatal classes and breast/chest feeding classes
- Postpartum physical assessments and education
- Lactation support
- Family planning and contraception support and education
Midwifery clients can choose to give birth either in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) or at home.
