Midwifery services in PEI

Midwives provide client-centered primary care from preconception through to eight weeks postpartum for clients and their newborns. They specialize in providing care to low-risk, healthy individuals but can also recognize and make appropriate referrals when necessary. This includes:

  • Preconception counseling tailored to a family's needs (discussing fertility issues or planning for an upcoming pregnancy, providing information on midwifery)
  • Pap/HPV screening
  • Ordering screening and diagnostic tests (for example, ultrasounds and bloodwork)
  • Prescribing medications applicable to the client’s care
  • Assessments and education on various related topics
  • Prenatal classes and breast/chest feeding classes
  • Postpartum physical assessments and education
  • Lactation support
  • Family planning and contraception support and education

Midwifery clients can choose to give birth either in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) or at home.
